(born 1941), English biologist. Dawkins's book The Selfish Gene (1976) did much to popularize the theory of sociobiology. In The Blind Watchmaker (1986) Dawkins discussed evolution by natural selection and suggested that the theory could answer the fundamental question of why life exists.
