(1910–94), British chemist, born in Egypt; full name Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin. She developed Sir Lawrence Bragg's X-ray diffraction technique for investigating the structure of crystals and applied it to complex organic compounds. Using this method she determined the structures of penicillin, vitamin B₁₂, and insulin. Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1964).
