Late 18th century; earliest use found in Minutes Consultation, Board of Revenue, Madras. From Urdu mīrās̱dār hereditary landowner, co-proprietor from Persian mīrās̱dār inheritor from mīrās̱ inheritance, estate (from Arabic mīrāṯ inheritance, estate from wariṯa to be heir, to inherit) + -dār.
