  • Any of various plants constituting the genus Cynoglossum (family Boraginaceae), especially a European weed, C. officinale, with dark red flowers, which was formerly used medicinally. Also called hound's-tongue.

Origin

Late Middle English; earliest use found in Guy de Chauliac's Grande Chirurgie. In some forms from dog + tongue; in some forms from the genitive of dog + tongue. In sense 1 after classical Latin cynoglossos (Pliny), itself from Hellenistic Greek κυνόγλωσσος, κυνόγλωσσον (Dioscorides); so called on account of the shape of its leaves.
