Mid 16th century; earliest use found in John Aylmer (d. 1594), bishop of London. In some forms from post-classical Latin domine fac totum ‘O Lord, do everything’ from classical Latin domine, vocative of dominus lord + fac, imperative of facere to do + tōtum the whole.
