Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Bartholomew Traheron (c1510–?1558), protestant writer and reformer. Originally from post-classical Latin cammaratus from classical Latin camara + -ātus; compare post-classical Latin camerare. In later use apparently re-formed from classical Latin camera camera + -ate.
