Any of a group of closely related antibiotics produced by the soil bacterium Streptomyces caespitosus; specifically (in full "mitomycin C") the principal member of this group, which inhibits DNA synthesis by cross-linking the two chains of duplex DNA molecules and is used medically as an antineoplastic agent.
