Any of a group of diseases resembling venereal syphilis but epidemiologically distinct from it, being spread by non-sexual contact, mainly among people living in conditions of poor hygiene and nutrition; (in later use) specifically the disease caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies endemicum, which causes lesions of the skin and bones similar to those of syphilis.
