Early 17th century (in an earlier sense). From classical Latin prehendere to grasp, seize, catch, variant of praehendere (recorded in some early MSS of classical and post-classical authors, frequently in later MSS) from prae- + a second element from the same Indo-European base as get, with an inserted nasal.
