Latin manuscript fragment containing a translation (probably from the Greek) of the earliest surviving Western list of New Testament scriptures, generally dated to the later part of the 2nd cent. a.d. Chiefly in "Muratorian canon", "Muratorian fragment".

Origin

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Brooke Westcott (1825–1901), biblical scholar and bishop of Durham. From the name of Luigi (Ludovico) Antonio Muratori, Italian scholar, who edited the manuscript fragment in volume 3 of his Antiquitates Italicae Medii Aevi + -an.
