Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Thomas More (1478–1535), lord chancellor, humanist, and martyr. Originally from Hellenistic Greek Πριαπιστής worshipper of Priapus (recorded in plural, Πριαπισταί) from Πρίαπος + -ιστής. In later use probably re-formed independently from Priapus + -ist.
