A quaternary ammonium compound which is present in various animal tissues and is also formed during putrefaction by dehydration of choline, and can be isolated as a toxic, odoriferous, syrupy liquid; trimethylvinylammonium hydroxide, CH₂=CHN(CH₃)₃OH. Formerly also: †choline itself (obsolete).

Mid 19th century (in an earlier sense). From neuro- + -ine. In sense 1 after French neurine; compare also German Neurine.
