Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Roger Ascham (d. 1568), author and royal tutor. From classical Latin framea kind of light, versatile spear used by Germanic peoples, in post-classical Latin also sword (Vulgate), apparently of Germanic origin, probably from an ablaut variant of the Germanic base of thrum, with sound substitution of/f/ for/θ/, a phoneme lacking in Latin.
