(1797–1828), Austrian composer. His music is associated with the romantic movement for its lyricism and emotional intensity, but it belongs in formal terms to the classical age. He composed more than 500 lieder, including the song cycles Die Schöne Müllerin (1823) and Die Winterreise (1827).
