The causative agent of leprosy, Mycobacterium leprae, which is an acid-fast rod-shaped bacterium which cannot be cultured in vitro but can be grown in a few animals, especially the nine-banded armadillo, Dasypus novemcinctus; also called Hansen's bacillus.
