Origin

Early 17th century; earliest use found in John Lane (fl. 1600–1630). From ancient Greek νομοθέτης a lawgiver, (in plural) at Athens, a committee charged with the revision of the laws from νομο- + -θέτης. Compare post-classical Latin nomothetes.
