  • (1905–84), Lebanese political leader. A Maronite Christian, he founded the right-wing Phalange Party in 1936 and served as a Member of Parliament 1960–84. His youngest son, Bashir (1947–82), was assassinated while president-elect; his eldest son, Amin (b.1942), served as president 1982–8.
