  • A large genus of parasitic basidiomycete fungi of the order Uredinales, many of which have several hosts and include some serious agricultural and horticultural pests (rusts); (also puccinia) a fungus of this genus, especially black stem rust of cereals, Puccinia graminis, which passes its winter stage on the leaves of barberry.

Early 19th century; earliest use found in John Hull (1764–1843), physician and botanist. From scientific Latin Puccinia, genus name from the name of Tommaso Puccini, Italian anatomist + scientific Latin -ia.
