Early 16th century; earliest use found in John Fitzherbert (d. 1531). Back-formation from manumission, after e.g. commise, premise, remise. In forms in -ss- probably after (or perhaps independently from) classical Latin manūmiss-, past participial stem of manūmittere manumit.
