  • A disease of silkworms caused by the microsporidian parasite Nosema bombycis, and characterized by the appearance of dark spots on the insect and the stunting of its growth. Also "pébrine disease".

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in All the Year Round. From French pébrine from Occitan pebrina (although this is apparently first attested later: 1886) from pebre pepper + -ina.
