(1917–79), US organic chemist. He was the first to synthesize quinine, cholesterol, chlorophyll, and vitamin B₁₂, and with the Polish-born US chemist Roald Hoffmann (born 1937) discovered symmetry-based rules governing the course of rearrangement reactions involving cyclic intermediates.
