  • Usually in plural Any of various concepts or relations treated at the beginning of Aristotle’s Categories, before the discussion of the categories (the predicaments) themselves; a concept necessary for understanding the Aristotelian categories.

Origin

Late 16th century; earliest use found in William Bathe (1564–1614), Jesuit and linguistic scholar. From ante- + predicament, after post-classical Latin antepredicamenta, plural, itself after ancient Greek τὰ πρὸ τῶν κατηγοριῶν, lit. ‘the things before the categories’.
