(c.1595–1617), North American Indian princess, daughter of Powhatan, an Algonquian chief in Virginia. According to John Smith, an English colonist, Pocahontas rescued him from death at the hands of her father. In 1613 she was seized as a hostage by the English and she later married another colonist, John Rolfe.
