Origin

Late 19th century; earliest use found in Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute. From French pintadera and its etymon Spanish pintadera neolithic patterned stamp, originally of the type found in the Canary Islands from pintar +-adera (from classical Latin -āt̄ōria: see -atory).
